Steering Gear
MechanismPart
The Steering Gear is a precisely machined set of interlocking gear teeth cast in hardened iron, engineered to translate the rotational input of the Wooden Steering Wheel into directional control of the airship's rudder assembly. Its compact rack-and-pinion design is instantly recognizable by the beveled teeth along its curved face and the central spindle bore. Fine tolerances in its machining ensure smooth, responsive steering without play or slippage.
The Steering Gear is a required crafting component for the Cockpit at the Fabricator station. The Cockpit is the command center of any airship, housing the pilot's controls and navigation interface, and it cannot function without a properly installed Steering Gear. Players assembling a Cockpit should pair this component with a Wooden Steering Wheel, which connects directly to the gear mechanism inside the completed assembly.
Steering Gears are crafted from iron ingots at a forge or found as salvage in shipwrecks and mechanical ruins throughout the game world. Because the Cockpit is one of the first major airship components most players construct, Steering Gears tend to be in high demand early in the progression. Keep a small surplus on hand, as upgrading or repairing the Cockpit may call for additional units.
