Merchant

Merchants are specialized trader NPCs found in human settlements throughout the Starting Meadows, operating as the primary commercial interface between players and the civilized economy of Zone 1. They stock a rotating inventory of tools, crafting components, consumables, and basic equipment that refreshes periodically, providing a reliable source of goods that complements what players can craft or loot from dungeons. Interacting with a Merchant opens a buy-sell interface where players can exchange gathered resources or excess loot for items they need.

From a progression standpoint, Merchants play a particularly important role in the early and mid-game by stocking components needed for airship construction, including Cockpit parts, Engine components, Balloon materials, and Energy Generator supplies. They also sell basic food ingredients that support the cooking system introduced in Learn Basics - Cooking, and repair materials for stone and wood-tier equipment relevant during the Learn Basics - Repairing tutorial quest. As players progress into Zone 2 biomes like the Russet Forest and Rotten Island, the goods sold by Starting Meadows Merchants remain useful as baseline supplies and crafting inputs.

Merchants operate within the social ecosystem of Starting Meadows settlements, dependent on the safety provided by Guards and the agricultural output of Settlers. Players who antagonize Guards or steal from settlements risk losing Merchant access until their standing recovers, making peaceful settlement relations a practical economic priority as well as a role-playing one. Merchants occasionally offer special stock tied to in-game events or seasonal updates, so checking back regularly even after the tutorial phase is completed can yield unexpectedly valuable items that accelerate progression through Zone 2 or early Zone 3.
